Blind Date

In the early 80's, Bob Kerr set me up with someone to play the mixed pairs at the Pasadena Bridge Week Regional. I was pleasently surprised that the guy was quite nice looking and also seemed both pleasant and polite. I only remember one hand from the event and I'm sure that I only remember it because of partner's comment.

I held  S:72 H:Q75 D:K943 C:Q1052. The auction was short and sweet. 1NT on my right, pass, 3NT on my left, all pass.

I looked at my hand and thought that LHO probably had no 4-card major or she might have tried Stayman. I didn't like leading from the minor tenances into what were most likely the opponents best suits.

I led the H:5. This was the hand.

S: KQ3
H: J942
D: QJ106
C: A5
S: 72
H: Q75
D: K943
C: Q1063
S: 10854
H: A1086
D: 5
C: 9742
S: AJ96
H: K3
D: A872
C: KJ8
The first trick proceeded H:5,4,8,3. Partner returned the H:6 to the King and... I led hearts to avoid being endplayed in a minor, so I looked over the spots and played the H:Q. 3NT made 3 at our table and made more at most other tables around the room.

Partner exclaimed, "You unblocked the Queen of Hearts at trick two! Will you marry me?"

I guess that's what he was looking for in a wife. We lived in different cities and he never did ask me out.
