Notes for Beginners

Early in my bridge career, I discovered that if I do what I know how to do my results turned out just fine. This simply means that when you're learning, try to take the most normal action that occurs to you. You're not trying to be the hero; you're trying to be the winner. The most frequent winner is often the most consistent player, particularly at team games.

I concentrate on being a good partner. There aren't enough of those around. If you establish yourself as a good partner and a careful player, better players will play with you.

I have a friend who occasionally teachs bridge classes. She says there's a rock somewhere in the woods with all the secrets of bridge written on it. I don't know where the rock is but I do know a few of the

Rules of the Rock

  1. With two five card suits, bid the higher one first.

  2. New suits at the three level are game forcing.

  3. Non-game raises of notrump are invitational.

  4. Minimum bids of old suits are not forcing.

  5. Minimum bids of Notrump are not forcing. (The rock existed before 1 NT forcing after one of a major opening)

  6. Jumps from the one level to the three level in old suits are invitational.

  7. Fourth Suit is always forcing.

  8. If a player bids fourth suit and then makes any call at the three level, it is game forcing.
